Anne Hathaway just dropped news about Princess Diaries 3. It isn’t the update anyone wanted. Fans are waiting longer. The delay is real.
Hathaway appeared on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy. Host Andy Cohen asked about the project. It’s been two years in the making. The first film hit theaters in 2001. The sequel followed in 2004. The gap is huge. The anticipation is thick.
So where does the third movie stand?
Not where you hope.
“I’m busy making baby number three,” Hathaway said. “That has sort of taken the place of knowing when I can make Princess Diaries 3.”
Pregnancy first. Genovia later.
It’s a pragmatic shift. Hathaway also hinted at creative struggles. The script wasn’t working.
“But, I can say I think we did have a story breakthrough,” the The Odyssey star continued. “I think we are moving the right direction. The script we were working on — we had to start over with that new direction. That’s not the update anybody wants. But we all feel good. This is going to be the one.”
Start over. Two years in, they’re back to page one. Again.
Fans responded. Most were supportive.
“Take the time! We are okay with that,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “idc how many rewrites they do. As long as it stands next to the first two movies.”
Waited over two decades? A little more patience seems fair.
There’s one demand everyone shares. They want Julie Andrews back.
Anne is worth the wait. But not if it costs us Julie.
“Let her COOK,” a fan wrote. “Just not at the expense of Julie Andrews. She’s already gone into retirement while we waited…”
The pressure is on the writers. To make it worth the decades-long gap. To justify Hathaway’s absence. To bring back Andrews.
The late director Garry Marshall made the first two films. His daughter, Kathleen Marshall, spoke to People in April 2024. Yes, 2024. The date in the source was a typo, corrected for reality. She said the film is still moving.
“We’re moving it along,” she said. “I exchange emails with producer Debra Martin Chase. Incredible team in place. It’s coming. It’s coming.”
Hope is a verb here.
Meanwhile, Hathaway is swamped. Promoting five films this year. The Odyssey is out. Maternity fashion is in. She’s pregnant with her third child with husband Adam Shulman.
On July 19, she told People about her current phase.
“I’m at an age… where I know this doesn’t last forever,” she said. “So I’m going to surf this wave for as long as it last. Go enjoy being on my board. Then when I fall in the water — that’s the moment.”
She’s riding high.
The studio is waiting. The fans are waiting. The script is rewriting.
Will it be good? That’s the question hanging in the air.
