Preventing Dry Eyes: Expert Advice from an Ophthalmologist

11

More than 16 million Americans suffer from dry eye, a condition that causes discomfort and irritation. While aging increases risk, preventative measures can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing this condition.

The Importance of Thorough Makeup Removal

According to Mina Massaro-Giordano, MD, Director of Dry Eye Service at NYU Langone Health, completely removing all eye makeup at the end of the day is paramount. Leftover residue can irritate the eyes and disrupt the natural tear film, leading to discomfort.

The buildup on the lash line interferes with the healthy function of the meibomian glands. These glands produce essential oils that stabilize the tear film; poor hygiene can disrupt this process.

Beyond Makeup: Holistic Prevention

Dr. Massaro-Giordano recommends these additional steps for optimal eye health:

  • Warm Compresses: Apply a warm compress to the lash line, then gently wipe the area clean. This liquifies the meibum (oil) inside the meibomian glands, improving oil flow and tear film stability.
  • Humidifiers: Use a humidifier, especially at night, to combat dry air that can exacerbate dryness.
  • The 20-20-20 Rule: Limit prolonged screen time. Every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds to encourage blinking and maintain eye lubrication.
  • Vent Adjustment: Avoid direct airflow from vents in cars or airplanes, as this dries out the eyes.
  • Hydration: Stay well-hydrated to ensure a healthy tear film.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from wind and UV rays with sunglasses.

Why This Matters

Dry eye isn’t just about discomfort; it can affect daily life and, in severe cases, vision. The rise in digital device usage and prolonged screen exposure has contributed to a surge in cases. Proactive preventative care, guided by expert advice, is crucial for preserving eye health.

By prioritizing thorough hygiene, environmental control, and mindful habits, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing dry eye and maintain optimal vision comfort.
